Scottsdale has been a place of many faces -- with one spirit -- for
nearly 1,200 years. As far back as 800 A.D., the Hohokams farmed this area now
known as Scottsdale, and built hundreds of miles of canals to support their
agricultural lifestyle.
Although it has grown since its founding by Winfield Scott in 1888, Scottsdale
has maintained its friendly, hometown atmosphere... from its neighborhoods of
planned developments, houses, patio homes, apartments, parks, shopping centers,
resorts and golf courses... to its downtown area of historical buildings, arts
and antiques district, retail, dining, entertainment, businesses, health care
campus and stadium... to the airpark with aviation, manufacturing and corporate
centers, retail and restaurants... to the northern desert areas with open space,
recreation centers, homes, golf courses, McDowell Mountains and Sonoran Desert
landscape. Scottsdale's population is a blend of many faces who share common
